Promoting Young Talent with the CISPA Summer School: CISPA Zine No. 7 Released
Science thrives on formats for exchange and networking. Among these, large international conferences are the most prestigious. In Germany and across Europe, Summer Schools are a particularly popular format for fostering young talent. A Summer School is a multi-day, often single-themed event aimed at advanced students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers. Since 2018, CISPA has hosted one to two Summer Schools annually, organized by the CISPA Cysec Lab team. These events are supported by one or more CISPA-Faculty, who define the academic focus and invite speakers.
“Science is a constant struggle for new insights with the aim of making the world a better and, in the case of CISPA, a safer place,” writes CISPA’s founding director and CEO, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Backes, in the foreword to CISPA Zine No. 7. “The personal exchange with others is an essential part of this journey, as is learning from those who are already a few steps ahead on the career ladder. Nowhere can such an exchange be more successful than in the protected environment of a summer school.” How this is achieved in practice is detailed in the current issue of the Zine.
The Zine’s cover story looks back on the event and features insights from organizer Andrea Ruffing, as well as speakers and participants. In an interview, CISPA Faculty Prof. Dr. Sascha Fahl explains the significance of a Summer School for a scientific career and highlights his priorities in selecting speakers and participants. A poster illustrates the essential program elements of a Summer School, while key data and facts about the CISPA Summer School are also presented.
The CISPA Zine focuses on important developments, departments and research areas at CISPA Helmholtz-Center for Cybersecurity. Its playful design, unusual folding and integrated poster combined with crisp text formats are the trademarks of this publication. Read the Zine online here.
