A Look Inside the Work of the Empirical Research Support Department: CISPA Zine No. 8 Is Out Now
Empirical cybersecurity research requires not only theoretical expertise but also sophisticated methodologies and precise data collection instruments. This is especially true in human-centered security research, which involves real users, sensitive data, and complex study designs. Reliable and reproducible results in this area depend on a solid methodological foundation. To provide CISPA researchers with targeted support in these efforts, the interdisciplinary Empirical Research Support department was established in 2020.
" A key component of the excellence strategy at CISPA is to provide our researchers with every possible support so that they can fully concentrate on their research," writes CISPA Founding Director and CEO Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Michael Backes in the foreword to the new Zine. "In this context, I am particularly proud of the Empirical Research Support department, whose work is presented in this zine. Having a unit dedicated solely to supporting researchers in empirical and behavioral research and providing research infrastructure is something special." The Zine showcases how exactly the department operates.
In the Zine's main feature, Dr. Michael Schilling – head of the Empirical Research Support Team and a driving force behind its creation – explains the vision that inspired the project. In an interview, CISPA-Faculty Dr. Sven Bugiel shares his perspective on how the team was built and how the collaboration between researchers and the department has evolved. A large-format poster illustrates the typical consulting processes and inquiries that are part of the team's daily work. Of course, the issue also includes key data and facts about the department.
The CISPA Zine focuses on important developments, departments and research areas at CISPA Helmholtz-Center for Cybersecurity. Its playful design, unusual folding and integrated poster combined with crisp text formats are the trademarks of this publication. Read the Zine online here.
