First five CISPA faculty have successfully completed tenure track

After a probationary period, Dr. Katharina Krombholz, Dr. -Ing. Ben Stock, Dr. Nils Ole Tippenhauer, Dr. Nico Döttling, and Dr. -Ing. Sven Bugiel have been appointed tenured faculty.

In order to give aspiring scientists a long-term perspective, CISPA has set up a career development program similar to the tenure-track program that the federal and state governments are establishing at all German universities to promote young scientists. In CISPA's tenure track, researchers must prove that they can compete internationally. This includes submitting publications to top conferences, mentoring young scientists, establishing collaborations, and acquiring third-party funding. If they succeed, they are appointed as tenured faculty, i.e. senior scientists "for life".  At CISPA, the first generation of tenure-track faculty have now achieved this. Dr. Katharina Krombholz, Dr. Ben Stock, Dr. Nils Ole Tippenhauer, Dr. Nico Döttling, and Dr. -Ing. Sven Bugiel were successfully evaluated and become tenured faculty.

Dr. Katharina Krombholz conducts research on usable security and privacy at CISPA. Her research focuses on understanding the behavior of users, security, and privacy in the Internet of Things, and the user-friendly design of security technology, for example, cryptographic methods. Previously, Katharina Krombholz spent several years as a lecturer at the Vienna University of Technology, where she also received her PhD and worked as a researcher at SBA Research.

Dr. -Ing. Ben Stock's research interests include web and network security as well as reverse engineering. Prior to becoming a tenure-track faculty member, Ben Stock was a postdoctoral fellow and later a research group leader at CISPA. He completed his PhD at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2015.

Dr. Nils Ole Tippenhauer focuses on the information security of practical systems such as industrial plants. Other research interests include wireless communication security and embedded systems. Before moving to CISPA, Nils Ole Tippenhauer was an assistant professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design for 4.5 years. He completed his PhD at ETH Zurich in 2012.

Dr. Nico Döttling is a cryptographer and focuses his research at CISPA on public-key encryption and secure multiparty computation. Nico Döttling moved to CISPA from Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen Nuremberg, where he worked as an assistant professor. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley. He completed his PhD at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2014.

Dr. -Ing. Sven Bugiel is a security researcher at CISPA focusing on platform security, trusted computing, and their interfaces with usable security. One of his past research topics has been access control systems for the Android operating system and the integration of hardware security components into system architectures. Sven Bugiel has previously been a research group leader at CISPA. He completed his doctorate at Saarland University in 2015.
